Self-induced intoxication in Maine Criminal Law

Current through 2026 Maine legislative session

In Maine criminal law, “Self-induced intoxication” is a term defined by statute rather than by its everyday meaning. Its statutory definition — quoted verbatim below — controls how the term is applied throughout the Maine criminal code.

What does “Self-induced intoxication” mean in Maine criminal law?

"Self-induced intoxication" means intoxication caused when a person intentionally or knowingly introduces into the person's body substances that the person knows or ought to know tend to cause intoxication, unless the person introduces them pursuant to medical advice or under such duress as would afford a defense to a charge of crime. (17-A M.R.S. § 37)
